The "State Press" is running a story about Arizona State Universities decision to give President Obama a foam finger in lieu of a honorary degree at this May's graduation ceremony, where Obama will be a key note speaker . Due to the backlash from the community Dr. Crow (President of ASU) sent a press release announcing that instead of the honorary degree a scholarship fund would be created in Obamas' name. It would be the ultimate gift that kept on giving, keeping with the Obama administrations theme of focusing on improving education. But oh no, no, the talking heads and demanding alumni were not satisfied. One such person even admitted to tearing up his degree and recanting his donation. Thus the plan to present the President with a large foam finger that says "we're number one" was crafted. And just like that everyone is happy.
We are all familiar with these tacky game day paraphernalia used at those oh so educational university town hall meetings...right. Supposedly it is quite an honor to receive the finger from the all to well known "party school".
How is it that we have gotten to a point in our culture that a large tacky foam finger used by drunk college students to show their school spirit has become the ultimate honor? This speaks miles to the quality of our education system. I am so glad they raised my tuition.
But hey, what more could we expect from a #1 research university?
Sincerely,
Life Out Loud
